A women’s circle in Torquay is celebrating its first anniversary and the beginning of the next year of success, thanks to funding from Sanctuary Housing.
Community organisation Imagine CIC has been running the circle for the last 12 months, providing a safe space for local women to come together and empower each other.
With Sanctuary’s grant giving the group funding for another year, the attendees will be able to take part in an even wider range of activities, which will include yoga, meditation and holistic therapy.
There will also be discussions, debates and opportunities to learn new skills and boost employability, all in a friendly and welcoming environment.
The Torquay circle, which receives additional support from Bay charity Shekinah, proved so popular that a further group based in Paignton was launched in February this year.
Both women’s circles are part of the Stepping Stones project, led by Imagine CIC and funded by Sanctuary, which supports Bay residents to access training and opportunities to help them find employment.
The success of the women’s circles has been further recognised this month, as the project received Sanctuary’s Torbay Community Star Award for July.
Sally Renshaw, project leader for the circles, said: “We are thrilled that Sanctuary’s funding will see us continue for another year. Both circles have been successful beyond anything I could have imagined and some of our attendees have really achieved their dreams.
“It’s an absolute privilege to be part of the journeys of these inspirational women.”
Sanctuary’s neighbourhood partnerships manager, Lynne Roberts, commented: “The support provided in the circles is incredible and I know some of the women who attend have found them to be a real lifeline.
“All local females will be given a warm welcome at either group for whatever support they need.”
The women’s circle in Torquay takes place at Shekinah’s Endeavour House, in Union Street, every Thursday between 12.30 and 2.30pm. The Paignton group meets each Friday from 10am until 12 noon at Great Parks Community Centre. For more information call Sally Renshaw on 07818 167 672.
This project is funded by Sanctuary’s Community Investment Fund, supporting projects which benefit Sanctuary residents and their communities.
